Accessibility statement

Screen reader accessible versions of the ready-made thinking guides are available.

We have made every effort to ensure that the design of this website conforms to web standards for both usability and accessibility. Our aim is to provide equivalent access to the information on this website for all users.

Whilst creating this website, we've incorporated recommendations and best practice from the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium's) WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) guidelines.

The website uses XHTML code to provide document structure and CSS (Cascading Stylesheets) to provide document formatting. By following guidelines set down by the W3C we are trying to make sure that all the information on our website is available to everybody: not just the text, but the information contained in the images and other media. Using these technologies also allows us to provide a website that loads faster, and displays in more devices. We believe the website template set contains valid XHTML and CSS code and meets Prioirty 2 (AA) of the Web Accessibility Initiative's guidelines.

We've involved users throughout the development of Exploratree, following a user-centred design (UCD) process. We've worked with teachers and children over two terms to inform the features and the way that Exploratree works. More about the process can be found in About Exploratree.

To ensure this website is as accessible as possible, Futurelab:

  • Set accessibility targets prior to development
  • Measured progress towards those targets during development
  • Continues to monitor accessibility now the site is live.

Creating a thinking guide

Creating a thinking guide currently requires the Flash plugin. Accessible HTML versions of the standard thinking guides are available, and we are exploring ways to provide an accessible HTML version of the Flash tool for future release. Any comments or suggestions would be very welcome.

Resizing text

We've built the website in such a way as to allow your browser to increase the size of the text, whilst keeping the site usable. If you're using Internet Explorer or Firefox, you can change the size of the text by going to the View menu and selecting one of the options from the Text Size menu.
